For those that don't know about Donna Curtis and The Donna Curtis Dream House, this is a charity that was set up by Donna's Mum and Dad, Len and Babs Curtis. They have devoted their lives into this charity to give children with life threatening illnesses a holiday of a lifetime. Its all about QUALITY of life than QUANTITY of life..! and Len and Babs have made sure that these children have had QUALITY of life.
Where do I come in to it or am I just someone with the same surname that has latched on to this...? Not at all. I was married to Donna and although very young myself when Donna passed away I felt the pain of losing someone so special and brave. I have never spoke about this before and I will keep it brief because its not about me, it's about Donna, but I think its only fair that you can read and understand the connection and where I come into it.
When Donna died she left a little red box that she kept her wishes in. The main wish was to help other Children in the same position to lead a life as much as they could and to try and block out the pain they were going through, this wish was certainly granted by Len and Babs by starting the Donna's Dream House Charity, they have watched children with life threatening illnesses come and go at the Dream House, they have made sure they have had an amazing holiday and live their short lives to the full. I applaude them for what they have achieved and I applaude them for being brave themself to be able to do this.
Another one of Donna's wishes was (in her own words) "You have had your Princess of pain, now I want you to find your Princess of pleasure". That's where I come into it..! Being only 24 years old myself when Donna passed away, all she wanted was for me to move on and live my life....... Now, 16 years on, I am happily married to Kathryn with 3 amazing children. They know all about Donna and who she is, we have never been afraid of telling them and we answer any questions they have. I don't get upset every New Year on the anniversary of her death, I don't get upset on her Birthday, I don't get upset when people talk about her, all because I am fullfilling one of her last wishes and that is what matters to me and my family..!
On Wednesday 21st December Mindless thugs broke into the Dream House and set fire to the main administration block which also houses the main office. They purposely piled up photos and other memorabilia of Donna and set fire to them. As you can imagine, these are things that can never be replaced so we are appealing for any information to help find the person(s) who done this. An arson probe has been launched after heartless firestarters targeted a charity which helps seriously ill children.
Intruders, who broke in, set fire to pictures and mementoes of Donna Curtis – in whose memory the charity was set up – as well as part of the Dream House’s Chapel Street building.
We have organised a charity night for the Donnas Dream House. It has been been confirmed as Saturday 31st March 2012. Tickets are available at £5 each and they will be sold at a first come first served basis. Be quick because they are selling fast..!
